Instead of Chrome
Firefox
Imports your bookmarks and saved passwords on first run. Hardened builds exist if you want to go further.
What it is
An independent browser engine — not another skin over Chrome's. Extensions, sync, profiles, containers that keep one site's cookies away from another's. LibreWolf is the hardened fork for people who want the defaults tightened further.
What you give up
- A handful of sites are still built and tested against Chrome only, and will occasionally misbehave.
- A few Chrome-exclusive extensions have no equivalent.
- On some machines, some pages feel marginally slower. Most people cannot tell.
How to move
- 01Install it and accept the import prompt — bookmarks, history and passwords come across in one step.
- 02Set it as the default browser, or you will keep landing back in Chrome by accident.
- 03Turn on Enhanced Tracking Protection at strict, and add uBlock Origin.
- 04Keep Chrome installed for the one banking site that needs it. That is not a failure.
